Symfonisk Sal, Thomas Jensens Allé 2, 8000 Aarhus, Denmark

P. Vasks: Cello Concerto no. 2 - Klatbutne (Presence)

E. Bloch: From Jewish Life

A. Vivaldi: Double Concerto for 2 celli in g minor, RV 531

G. Sollima: Violoncelles, Vibrez!

At Presence the two cellists of Ensemble Hermes, twin sisters Gabriella and Rebecca C. S. Fuglsig, will play as soloists with Hermes in a repertoire in which every piece somehow revolves around the theme of being and being present; being present after a time, where the population of the whole world have been forced to be absent. Absent from all the things that used to gather us - concerts, family parties, even dinners among friends.

The concert begins with the main work, the 2nd Cello Concerto by P. Vasks with the given name Klatbutne (Presence). Vasks himself has explained the title as: “by which I mean that I am here. I am not distant. With every breath I am here in this world, with all my ideals and dreams of a better world”. In this concerto and in the following suite you will hear Gabriella C. S. Fuglsig as the soloist.

After Presence follows the suite From Jewish Life by Ernest Black; a suite that invites for meditation, reflection and prayer in the three movements called Prayer, Supplication and Jewish Song. The suite represents the jewish soul and tradition with all its expressiveness, insitingness and presence.

Bloch’s melancholic suite is followed by the only double concerto for two celli written by Vivaldi. This is when Rebecca C. S. Fuglsig will join Gabriella as soloist. Its electrifying, cadenza-like opening leaves one in no doubt of its highly charged emotional content. Its slow movement, styled as that of a trio sonata, breathes an almost autobiographical sadness. Its frenetic finale, see-sawing in rhythm and tonality alike, keeps one on the edge of one’s seat.

The whole concert will finish with the catchy and rocky Violoncelles, Vibrez! by the italian composer Giovanni Sollima.
