Ernest Bloch: Baal Shem Suite
Eugène Ysaÿe: Les Neiges d’antan
César Franck: Sonate for violin & piano in A major
Peteris Vasks: Vientulais Engelis - Lonely Angel
In this concert Ensemble Hermes presents some of the most sublime and expressive pieces for violin and string orchestra. The program consists of the melancholic Baal Shem Suite by Ernest Bloch, Eugene Ysaÿe’s lyrical Les Neiges d’antan and finally the ethereal Lonely Angel by Peteris Vasks. Agnes Hauge Mortensen also performs César Franck’s Violin Sonata in A with Aya Tominaga at the piano.
The tone of the violin is described as that of singing, and for many violin players it is precisely the human voice which serves as the model for tone production. It is when the violinist manages to approach the naturalness of the song, some of the most heartfelt and beautiful music can happen. This is very much what Vasks’ Lonely Angel calls for, and we have therefore chosen to approach this concert as an immersion into the spirituality of the singing tone of the violin, through which one can - sometimes - even hear the angels sing.
